2013: Task A - That's Rubbish (Research)

The brief:

  • Design an alphabet from refuse or found objects.
  • Digitally photograph or scan the objects.
  • Create your own 'rubbish' font.
To find some inspiration I took to the computer and did a google search. At first all you see is the expected; pictures of rubbish-piles and the like. As I got deeper into my research I started to find some creative concepts in regards to rubbish.

I couldn't find the origin of this photograph but I found it creative. It's an installation art piece which appears to be a pile of garbage on the ground. When a light is pointed at it from a precise angle it reveals a shadow of two people sitting back-to-back sipping from a wine glass and smoking. I could try experimenting with rubbish shadows myself to see if typography can be created in this way.

This post shows a creative use of bubble-wrap - which is just thrown away as trash once it has served its purpose - to create typography (although many people save it to pop all the bubbles and then throw it away).
